Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks
Project Type
Photography
Date
April 2023
Whistling ducks, black-bellied whistling ducks, are now year-round residents in Florida, having expanded from a single flock in Sarasota in 1981. They have adapted to various habitats, including urban and rural areas, and are increasing their range even further north. Fulvous whistling ducks, which used to be rare in Florida, are now abundant in rice-growing and freshwater wetland areas of south Florida. We see "squeaker ducks" here at Altamont Farms starting in late May. They set up shop in our wetland areas, but seem to prefer the smaller section on the north side of the property adjacent to the river. We see them in large groups of 15+ birds roosting in trees late in the day.
